Random Fandom TV News: Ming-Na Wen now to be part of Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Series

We’re still in the development stages of Joss’ latest foray back into the television scene, with the help of The Avengers‘ success on the big screen, of course.  It’s already been confirmed that Clark Gregg, who will reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the series.  Now, we have our second confirmation of who will be on the regular cast.

Joss Whedon has cast ER‘s Ming-Na Wen in Marvel’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series that he’s developing. Wen will play Agent Melinda May. Described as “soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, Melinda is an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can — and has — gone beyond the call of duty.”

With The Avengers’ success, it’ll be interesting to see how a series will do, considering it’s not really about the superheroes but about the humans that deal with the daily threats of the world.  Will it hold up as a series?  I hope so.  Joss has had a love-hate relationship with TV, gaining popularity for both his long-standing shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as well as his short-lived shows (*cough* Firefly *cough*).

The story will revolve around the activities of the top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D espionage organization featured in The Avengers.  Whedon is tentatively set to direct the pilot for the series, that he will write along side his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

Let’s hope the network gives this one a chance, as they should, because I’m sure that Whedon, considering he has The Avengers 2 to deal with in the near future, will try to make the connections between the two that only geeks will geek about.

Speaking of geeking out…  what are Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau doing these days?
