I always thought this was a no-brainer, but this movie actually wasn’t all that stellar according to box office numbers (fortunately for them, not as badly as another of my DWA favorites, ‘Rise of the Guardians‘. However, I don’t always go by box office numbers… well, I’d like to say that I never go by box office numbers when it comes to choosing what movies to watch. ‘How to Train Your Dragon‘ was cute, sweet, beautiful, amazing, and stellar, and I’m glad they’re making a sequel out of it. I don’t always approve of sequels, but in this case, I see the potential. They’ve already been doing pretty well with the ‘Riders of Berk‘ animated series on television, so I can see this working, too, especially if they can get the original cast to come back.
The studio has announced that the sequel, which will of course be in 3D and is looking at release some time in 2013, is now moving full speed ahead with cast and crew taking form. Most of the voice talents from the first movie are confirmed to be returning, including Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, TJ Miller, and Kristen Wiig. At the moment, it’s unclear whether or not Gerard Butler will return as well.
Dean DeBlois will handle writing and directing the movie this time around. Chris Sanders, who co-directed the original with DeBlois, will be helping out as sort of an adviser along the way. Sanders is currently co-directing another animated feature for DreamWorks called The Croods.
