J.J. Abrams Lends Advice for Third Act

There were a couple times in Iron Man 3 where our lifeline was we’d call Jon Favreau. ‘What do we do?’ He’d be like, ‘Stick with this. Stick with the love story,’ or whatever. Then he’d say, ‘Wait, didn’t we used to do this same thing with Shane?’ Because we reached out to Shane a bunch, particularly in the first Iron Man.

Then I think we reached out to J.J. Abrams at one point when we were really confused in Act III, and he helped us, too. It’s just interesting. Usually you think, in the legacy of filmmakers that come and go, there’s something so evocative about how strange it is that this particular strain of the Marvel universe was so successful, so what are the reasons for that and how do we keep that vital and just have fun?

Tony Stark’s New Ride

This new Iron Man 3 photo gives us a look at Tony Stark showing off his new ride, the Audi R8 e-tron. It’s the first electric car from the German automaker. It’s not just a product placement car though, there’s a reason they used this car in the movie. Variety reports that “Marvel was looking for a car partner that could provide a hybrid or electric-powered convertible for the movie since the drop top plays a significant role in the script.”

Robert Downey Jr. Votes for Pepper

When told that he couldn’t have both Pepper and Rhodey in The Avengers, he opted for Pepper. For Iron Man 3, this is what he had to say about more action for the female character:

“How do we have it so she’s not going [whining], ‘Tony!’ and I’m going [growling], ‘Where’s Pepper?’… That’s the other thing that I have been pushing for. She’s in great shape, she’s really game. There’s all these genre movies and you have these capable women and they’re like, ‘Oh my god, some action is happening, I better step away or get caught in something over here.’ It’s like, ‘Really, is that where we’re at in the 21st century?’”

Kevin Feige on the Damsel in Distress Issue

Kevin Feige admits to a love triangle, but not the usual kind:

“The love triangle in this movie is really between Tony, Pepper and the suits. Tony, Pepper and his obsession with those suits, and the obsession with technology. And, it’s sort of unique for a big superhero summer blockbuster franchise to have that kind of layers.

Yes, there’s a bad guy. Yes, the stakes are very, very high–the President of the United States is in danger. Air Force One is attacked. There are big stakes to this movie. But the real stakes are, is Tony going to be able to set aside the obsession to spend all day, every day in that workshop, tinkering with the suits in order to focus on, as he says in the trailer, the one thing that matters most – Pepper. And that actually is what the entire movie’s about.”

He goes onto to answer the question of Pepper having to “suit up” as well:

“I will tell you this. In this movie [Iron Man 3] we play with the convention of the damsel in distress. We are bored by the damsel in distress. But, sometimes we need our hero to be desperate enough in fighting for something other than just his own life. So, there is fun to be had with ‘Is Pepper in danger or is Pepper the savior?’ over the course of this movie.

In terms of where we go with future movies, we’ll see. In the comic books she does get a taste for the suit and becomes her own hero named Rescue, who doesn’t necessarily battle other people, but is on missions to help people and to save people. Will we do that down the line with Gwyneth Paltrow? Who knows. But her being in the suit is something we have been playing with since Iron Man 2, where we did some designs and it didn’t end up fitting in that movie. But the little taste you saw here [in an Iron Man 3 clip] is something that we’re certainly interested in. “
