The Zack Snyder-directed movie stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams(The Fighter) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Russell Crowe (Gladiator). Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

David Goyer on Secrecy

“It’s something Chris [Nolan] tried hard to do with the Batman films,” Goyer said. “I’m genuinely pleased with how much secrecy we’ve been able to maintain. There’s so much of the movie that people don’t know, that hasn’t been touched upon. The trailer’s just the tiniest, tiniest tip of the iceberg.”

Goyer also talked about whether or not this Superman movie will be darker.“Relatable and realistic doesn’t necessarily mean dark. I think it would be inappropriate for us to approach a Superman film as if we were doing The Dark Knight. The Batman films are a lot more nihilistic; Superman has always been a story about hope.”

David Goyer on Being Involved With Man of Steel

“Chris (Nolan) and I were working on The Dark Knight Rises, working on the story; we were blocked. We agreed to part ways for a couple of weeks and just see if something had bubbled at the surface.  So I went back to my home office. I was wasting time and procrastinating and took out an archive edition of some of the original Superman comic books, Action comic books and started rereading them because I couldn’t figure out this plot point on Dark Knight Rises, I just randomly sat down one afternoon and wrote up some ideas for Superman

When I met with Chris Nolan again in another week or so he said, “Have you worked out the problem on the Dark Knight Rises?” I said, “No,” he said, “What have you been doing?” and I said, “Well, I had this idea for Superman,” and because Chris likes to procrastinate as well he said “let’s hear it,” so I told him. And he literally called Jeff Robinov, who’s the head of Warner Bros, while I was sitting there and said, “Jeff, Dave just told me this take on Superman and you need to hear it, I’d like to produce it. Can we come in?” And we went in the next day. That’s how it happened. No, we weren’t trying to do it, it just happened.”

David Goyer on female Olson and black White

Regarding the question of having a female Jimmy Olsen, Goyer was less forthcoming, stating “I can’t comment on that.” Not that we need him to, per se: The initial rumors pointed to actress Rebecca Buller playing “Jenny Olsen,” and the following screen shot from the Man of Steel trailer practically confirms as much (I mean, who else would Perry White be dragging away from a collapsing Daily Planet?):

Goyer wasn’t afraid to address the so-called “controversy” over the race-switching of the Perry White character, stating, “I Thought it was an awesome choice. I think that it is silly that people are like, ‘You Can’t have a black guy named White.’ But I’m like, well what about Barry White? I thought that was stupid. You just want to get the best actor.” Amen to that.
