GRACELING Rights Acquired By Reliance Entertainment and Kintop Pictures

And the search for good young adult literature to be made into possible movie franchise success continues!  Here’s yet another amazing story that could be brought to screen in the near future.  It was just announced that the same studio companies that are bringing The Vampire Academy (starring Zoey Deutch) just acquired the rights to Graceling.  Not only that, it’s by the same producer that created some really amazing movies, including the Academy Award-Winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

gracelingbookcoverLES, CA(Marketwired – Apr 25, 2013) – India-based Reliance Entertainment has acquired as a film franchise starter the rights to Kristin Cashore’s bestselling, award winning young adult fantasy trilogy Graceling in partnership with Kintop Pictures.

Producer Deepak Nayar (Paranoia, Bend It Like Beckham, Buena Vista Social Club) will oversee the project for Reliance and Kintop Pictures and will produce alongside Tabrez Noorani (Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi) of Tamasha Talkies and Leigh Ann Burton for Blu-Sky Media.

British screenwriter Piers Ashworth (Nostradamus, St Trinian’s 1, 2 & 3) has signed on to write the script. Graceling is the first installment of a trilogy, which also includes The New York Times bestsellers Fire and Bitterblue. These New York Times bestselling books have won numerous awards, including the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award, the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature, the SIBA Book Award/YA, Indies Choice Book Award Honor Book, and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year.

Some of you may find the idea of all your favorite books being turned into movies as appalling, but really, what did you expect?  If it’s a good story, you’d better believe there’s a chance that it can be made into a movie, a mini-series, or even a TV series.  Sure, some don’t turn out the best, but there’s always a chance that it will be beautiful as well.  I can see this being beautiful before I can see it being less than.  And with the studio and the people they have backing it, it’s looking good already.

Here’s what producer Deepak Nayar said:

“We are very excited about a potential franchise with a strong and original female lead. Graceling offers an original storyline that we haven’t seen before that combines elements of Hunger Games and Game of Thrones.”
