Ansel Elgort Talks About the “elephant” in the room and chemistry between him and Shailene Woodley

I made my opinion clear enough regarding the news that Ansel Elgort being cast to play Gus to Shailene Woodley‘s Hazel for The Fault in Our Stars, considering they play siblings in another popular YA novel.  However, that doesn’t mean I am appalled at the idea.  It’s not like they’re really brother and sister.  But yes, there is doubt that viewers and fans of both can actually accept it outright without having watched either film to date.

Still, I’m hopeful that everything works out great and TFiOS can be phenomenal on screen as it was in the book.

Here’s what Ansel had to say about the whole “incest” issue:

“I think that’s the magic of being an actor,” he responded. “You can do that and it’s not weird — people play different roles all the time, you know?” But people don’t usually go from brother to lover in quick succession, we pointed out. “No, not always,” Elgort admitted. “‪I feel like Shailene is the best actress I’ve ever met, who was good enough to read with, and I feel like I’m a pretty good actor, too, so I think it’s going to be no problem for us. It’ll be great.‬” So really, no squeamishness at all about this? “‪Acting is acting. We have chemistry as brother and sister, but we’re both good enough to have chemistry as lovers as well.‬” Acting is acting. Repeat that to yourself.

Acting is certainly acting.   I have not seen Ansel in anything, so I’m keeping my opinion on his acting off the table until the appropriate time, when I either see him Divergent, or possibly the remake of Carrie (in which he also is in, starring Chloe Grace Moretz.)
